On this day in history - Ibn Jarir al Tabari
The passing away of Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (May Allah have mercy on him)
On this day in Islamic history (February 17, 923 CE {21/22 Shawwal, 310 AH}), Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, the influential Persian Islamic scholar, historian and exegete/commentator of the Qu’ran – from the region of Amol, Tabaristan during the reign of al-Mu’tasim of the Abbasid Caliphate (and now a modern day province of Iran) – passed away at the age of 86 in the city of Baghdad.
Some of his famous works
Apart from his most influential and known works like Tafsir al-Tabari (his commentary on the Quran) and his historical chronicle Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk (History of the Prophets and Kings), often referred to as Tarikh al-Tabari, he was also considered an impressive and prolific polymath who wrote on a variety of subjects like poetry, lexicography, grammar, mathematics and even medicine.
Today he is best known for his expertise in Qu’ranic exegesis/commentary (Tafsir), Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and world history.
An interesting fact about ibn Jarir al-Tabari
Amongst all his great achievements, another impressive feat of his was that he was able to complete the entire memorisation of the Qu’ran (in Arabic) at just seven years old. Masha’Allah (Allah has willed it).
